SAFERWHEELS: Study on accident causation for traffic accidents involving powered two-wheelers and bicycles in the European Union
The aim of this project is to better understand the causes of accidents involving powered two wheelers (PTW) and bicycles and the related injuries. As an integral part of this study, in-depth motorcycle and bicycle accident data will be collected from discrete sampling areas within six European countries.
The objective of this study is to gather PTW and bicycles accident data from in-depth crash investigation and medical data for those crashes and to store the information according to an appropriate and efficient protocol enabling a causation orient analysis. The expected outcomes are:
- Collection of accident data of at least 500 accidents of which between 80% and 85% involving powered two –wheelers and the remainder bicycle. Equal numbers of cases will be gathered in six countries, France, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and the UK
- In-depth investigation and reporting for each of the accidents on the basis of the data collected
- Description of the main accident typologies and accident factors
